Art Basel Miami

Art Basel was founded in 1970 by a group of art dealers and connoisseurs, and welcomed over 30,000 visitors and featured 281 exhibitors in Basel, Switzerland after just 3 years. In 2002, Art Basel launched in Miami Beach, under the leadership of former director Samuel Keller. Marc Speigler has been in this position since 2007, and oversees the development of the organization globally, which includes the other 2 shows in Basel, Switzerland and now Hong Kong.

Art Basel maintains an international network of managers covering five continents, who build and strengthen relationships year-round with art world luminaries, collectors and business leaders. Participating galleries for Art Basel shows are selected by committees composed of international gallerists who normally serve for several years. A fresh application process begins each year and all galleries must reapply.

Art Basel in Basel takes place in June, and marks the summer reunion of the international art world, hosted by the Swiss city of Basel, a cultural capital for centuries. In 2014, the show featured more than 300 galleries from thirty-six countries, attracting more than 92,000 artists, collectors, gallerists, museum directors, curators, and art enthusiasts. Began in just 2013, Art Basel Hong Kong is held in the spring, and has already become Asia’s largest annual art festival, attracting more than 65,000 attendees.

Art Basel Miami is also one of America’s biggest art festivals. In 2013 the show featured 258 galleries from 31 countries, and attracted 72,000 attendees. The event brings many thousands of people to Miami Beach from all around the globe, and features Miami’s leading private collections as well as others.
