Cleveland, Ohio has an extensive history as a Rust Belt manufacturing town, due to its location on the southern shore of Lake Erie, close to railroad lines and canals. Today, it boasts the nickname “The Comeback City,†because inner-city education and investment in the arts have been municipal priorities since the mid-1980’s.
Take in a show at the Theater District (the second largest performing arts center in the nation, after New York City’s Lincoln Center), spend an afternoon on the lake, or grab dinner and check out the commercial Victorian era architecture in the Warehouse District - there’s plenty to do and see in this revitalized Midwestern city.
Must see: Visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s iconic pyramid structure on the southern shore of Lake Erie for an insider’s guide to the “birthplace of rock and roll.†The Cleveland Museum of Art is always impressive, and the jazz at the Cleveland Bop Stop is the perfect conclusion to any night on the town.
Lodging: Stay at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel or the Ritz-Carlton Cleveland for easy walking access to the Cleveland Convention Center, the Flats, the Theater District, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Cuisine: Check out Pier W, a ship-shaped restaurant that juts out over the water and serves up fresh catches from Lake Erie. Or, if you’re more in the mood for white linens and leg of lamb, visit Muse, where the Ritz-Carlton chefs serve up three-, four- and five-course dinners with class.
Ground Transportation: There is a light rail system in Cleveland with three lines that connect the metro area. However, you’d be just as well-served to rent a car; the city’s main attractions are easily accessible by both.
Packing Tips: Cleveland has a temperate climate similar to that of the northeastern coast of the United States. However, if you’re visiting in the winter (November through April), pack for chilly, blustery weather, and check the weather before you leave for snow!
Recommended Books: Pick up a copy of Cleveland resident Dan Caon’s You Remind Me of Me or Among the Missing,  or check out some of Les Roberts’ work centering around Milan Jacovich. Roberts’ work is a favorite of many Cleveland residents because it frequently mentions local celebrities and landmarks.
Currency: The dollar is the local currency.
